The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has ordered its committee of Chief of Defence Staff to immediately active the Standby force of the supranational body and be battle ready to restore constitutional rule in Niger Republic.
This declaration was made known by the President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray while reading the resolution of the Extraordinary meeting of the Community held in Abuja on Thursday to discuss further possible lines of action against the military juntas in Niger.
He also called on the African Union, AU, partner countries, and institutions to support the resolution taken by the sub-regional body.
ECOWAS said all efforts made to dialogue with Niger Republic coup leaders have been defiantly rejected by them, adding that the continuous detention of Mohamed Bazoum and his family members is condemnable.
The resolution partly reads, “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately.
“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
