Uzoma Chioma Asagwara, from Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, has made history following her appointment as the Health Minister and Deputy Premier of the Province of Manitoba, Canada.
Asagwara, who took her oath of office last week in a colorful event, becomes the first black individual to achieve this position in Manitoba.
A former full-time psychiatric nurse specializing in mental health and addictions, Asagwara was first elected in 2019, becoming also the first non-binary and gender non-conforming MLA in Manitoba and the first of three black MLAs elected in Manitoba’s history.
Her appointment has been hailed by the governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, as an inspiration to Nigerians, particularly youths who have dreams and talents to nurture.
In a congratulatory message posted on his X page, formerly Twitte, Governor Otti wrote, “I am delighted to congratulate Uzoma Chioma Asagwara on her historic appointment as the new Health Minister and Deputy Premier of the Province of Manitoba, Canada.
