The Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, on Sunday night, was engulfed in a devastating fire that burnt the complex beyond recognition, in what has been alleged as the preventive and proactive move to forestall the impeachment plan against Governor Sim Fubara on the orders of former governor Nyesim Wike.
The blaze ignited around 10:00 PM, requiring several hours of strenuous effort by firefighters to quell it.
The investigation into the fire’s cause is currently underway, and security operatives have taken over the complex.
Online videos depict the assembly chamber in ruins, with both the roof and walls reduced to charred remnants.
This incident coincides with swirling speculations of a rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesome Wike, who now serves as the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Moreover, the situation unfolds against the backdrop of purported plans for Governor Fubara’s impeachment by members of the Rivers Assembly.
It was alleged that while those in favour of the impeachment were saying yea, those against it poured fuel and started burning the complex.
A group known as the Rivers in Diaspora has sounded the alarm, alleging a sinister scheme by certain individuals to sow discord between the incumbent Governor and his mentor.
