Senate President Godswill Akpabio asserts that among the three arms of government, legislators face the most unfair demands and criticism from Nigerians.
Speaking at the 100th birthday colloquium of Second Republic lawmaker Senator Kunle Oyero, represented by Senator Shuaib Salisu, the Senate President, as the Punch reports, emphasized that Nigerians often hold lawmakers responsible for matters beyond their control.
Akpabio remarked, “The one arm of government that people don’t really understand and is always a subject of ridicule and attack is the legislature.”
He explained that citizens sometimes disregard the legislator’s actual roles, which include making laws, performing oversight functions, and making appropriations.
However, he acknowledged a prevalent issue in measuring legislators’ performance, stating, “The metric of measuring the performance of legislators is the number of transformers and other material things they give to the people they are representing.”
On a different note, Sunday Oduntan, the Global President of AGSOBA, proposed a part-time approach for lawmakers.
He pointed out structural challenges in implementing laws and emphasized the need for a more effective political landscape.
