Subair Enitan, a 200-level Linguistics and African Languages student at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, began a 50-hour hand wash-a-thon on Friday to secure a Guinness World Record.
Having notified the Guinness World Record of her intentions earlier in June, Enitan was granted the opportunity to pursue her attempt on November 24th, 2023.
With the support of the school’s Students’ Union leadership, the venue for the extended hand-washing session was set at the school campus in Ile-Ife. Students and staff enthusiastically cheered her on as she commenced the challenge.
Before diving into the task, Enitan expressed her determination to emerge as the title holder for the longest duration of hand washing, stating, “My background and the lessons life taught me have motivated me to embark on this wash-a-thon. My experience is unexplainable but it taught me to be selfless. I am confident that I will reach the set goal of 50 hours of hand washing and by God’s grace, I will emerge victorious.”
Acknowledging the support received, she added, “Despite the massive support from my colleagues here, I pray for the grace of God to be able to complete the task. My parents are very supportive, and I urge Nigerians to rally around me while I work towards completing the task.”
The Student Union President, Abbas Akinremi-Ojo, highlighted the logistical support provided, including an ambulance, lighting, and water, to ensure Enitan’s success in the challenge.
Professor John Odedire, the Dean of Students Affairs at OAU, affirmed the university’s commitment to providing all necessary support to ensure Enitan achieves the record.
