Senate President Godswill Akpabio has asserted that Nigeria, within 24 years of democracy, achieved what took the United States of America 185 years to accomplish.
He stated this during the joint National Assembly session for President Bola Tinubu’s N27.5 trillion budget presentation,
Akpabio, in his address, pointed out the remarkable achievement of producing former senators as President and Vice President within Nigeria’s 24 years of democracy.
He contrasted this with the US, where President John F Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon B Johnson assumed office after 185 years of their democracy.
Tinubu’s political history as a senator in the short-lived Third Republic in 1992 and Vice-President Kashim Shettima’s senatorial role in 2019 were cited as instances of the notable evolution within Nigeria’s political landscape.
While praising Tinubu, Akpabio remarked, “It is said that no matter how an eagle flies, its Stallions keep pointing to the earth. Mr. President, we know no matter how high you rise in life, your heart will always point to this Assembly.”
Highlighting the comparative success, he continued, “But within 24 years of our democracy, we have achieved what took the United States of America 185 years to achieve.”
Akpabio also noted the presence of other former federal lawmakers from the National Assembly holding significant public positions, emphasizing the noteworthy contributions of these former legislators in Nigeria’s governance.
