Amid escalating tensions surrounding the Supreme Court hearing on the Nasarawa governorship election, both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have come together, sealing a historic peace deal in a joint ceremony observed by state security agencies on Monday in Lafia.
APC’s spokesperson in Nasarawa State, Mr. Otaru Douglas, stressed the importance of maintaining decorum and peace in a statement released Monday evening.
He urged party members and supporters to exercise civility, mutual respect, and cautioned against any behavior that might incite unrest.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear an appeal by PDP’s candidate, Mr. David Ombugadu, on Tuesday, January 16, challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision affirming the victory of Abdullahi A. Sule in the state’s last election.
The APC’s statement emphatically warned against unauthorized statements by party members on social or mainstream media platforms concerning court proceedings.
“On no account should any party member or supporter authorise or publish unauthorised statements from any quarters, be it on social or mainstream media platforms. Any statement on matters arising from the proceedings of the court to be issued by any individual or appointee of the Government must be verified and edited by the media centre of the party and that of the government house before its publication.
“To this end, we enjoin our teeming supporters to remain calm and refrain from any act capable of undermining the peace and stability of the state either before, during, and after the Supreme Court judgement.
“While we urge our party supporters to adhere and comply strictly with the terms and instructions by security agencies in the maintenance of law and order, we wish to also admonish the opposition PDP and its supporters to honour the peace treaty, observe all civilities and decorum in the interest of peace. Let it be known to us all that there must be a peaceful Nasarawa State for all before either APC or PDP can govern her,” the statement reads.
