Six Guinean supporters tragically lost their lives while commemorating Guinea’s first triumph at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Guinean Football Federation, Feguifoot, confirmed the incident occurred during celebratory events on the streets of Conakry, Guinea’s capital, following their 1-0 victory over The Gambia.
The celebratory fervor included car processions and motorcycle rides, resulting in the unfortunate fatalities.
Feguifoot’s media manager, Amadou Makadji, urged caution in celebrations, emphasizing the goal of football as bringing joy without causing grief.
“What is important is that our fans and the public celebrate in a very measured fashion.
“They have to be very careful to not put themselves in danger, because the goal of football is to bring joy and not leave families bereaved. We do not want deaths to mourn, so we call on everyone to celebrate but to take care of themselves so that nothing happens to them, ” he told BBC Sport Africa.
Guinea, renowned for passionate football enthusiasm, saw nationwide celebrations after their win.
Guinea secured the victory with Aguibou Camara’s goal, placing them second in Group C with four points.
Pascal Feindouno, a former star player, conveyed a message urging calm among Guinean fans, expressing concern over reported deaths and emphasizing support for the country without risking harm.
As the Africa Cup of Nations continues, with the final scheduled in Abidjan on February 11, the call for measured celebrations echoes amidst the nation’s football fervor.
