The Ogun State Police Command has made a startling revelation, exposing a peculiar kidnapping case as Olumide Openaike, a Microfinance Bank employee initially reported missing, staged his own abduction to escape a looming N1.7 million debt.
SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the unusual incident, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the banker’s disappearance.
Initially declared missing by his wife, Temitope, who shared her concerns with journalists, Olumide was later discovered in Mokwa, Niger State, revealing a concocted tale of abduction and financial woes.
Temitope’s relief about her husband’s return quickly turned into shock as the police unveiled the truth.
According to Odutola, Openaike diverted funds remitted by a customer to the bank for personal use, accumulating a debt of N1.7 million.
Faced with the consequences, he resorted to faking his own abduction, claiming depression as the motive.
“Yes, the police have found out that the banker, Olumide Openaike, faked his abduction over N1.7m debt. The money belongs to the bank where he works.
“What happened was that a customer was remitting the money to the bank but Openaike was diverting it to personal use. He said he then got depressed and decided to fake his abduction. He is already detained by the police,” The Punch quoted the spokesperson of the Ogun state Police Command to have said.
