Women from Jos South LGA in Plateau State, in a bold move, have launched a campaign against alcoholic drinks, storming shops and joints to seize and destroy the beverages they claim are turning their husbands into irresponsible individuals.
The crackdown, centered mainly in Gyel District, saw a massive turnout of women who, with the support of young girls, children, vigilantes, and other volunteers, targeted shops selling alcoholic products, especially the locally brewed one, ‘brukutu.’
Some shop owners, anticipating the women’s actions, locked up and disappeared, but the determined group vowed to return with even more stringent measures, as reported by Daily Trust.
This operation reportedly had the backing of community and traditional leaders, highlighting the gravity of the issue.
During the exercise in areas like Sabon Bariki and Bukuru Low Cost, the women focused particularly on locally produced alcoholic drinks and intoxicants believed to be harmful due to high chemical concentrations.
Expressing their concerns, one woman stated, “These drinks are turning our men into irresponsible people. The drinks are weakening them, taking away their strengths, and making them useless.”
The women highlighted the negative impact on the community, explaining how the excessive consumption of alcohol by youths was hindering their ability to engage in productive activities such as menial jobs or farming.
Despite the bold move by the women, a youth interviewed argued that their actions wouldn’t solve the underlying issue.
He suggested that empowerment by the government would be a more effective solution, allowing the youths to engage in meaningful activities rather than resorting to alcohol consumption.
