A devastating accident in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, claimed the lives of three individuals on Tuesday when a truck veered off an overhead bridge.
According to reports, the victims were trapped beneath the vehicle, succumbing to their injuries, while three others sustained injuries in the incident.
Eyewitnesses at the scene, located along Zaria Road, recounted the harrowing crash to PUNCH Online, revealing that approximately 45 cows also perished in the tragic accident, which occurred between 4 am and 5 am.
Timothy Garuba, one of the residents who spoke to our correspondent, described the sequence of events, stating, “A truck driver lost control on the Kabong fly-over bridge in Jos North Local Government Area early this morning.”
He continued, “The truck was carrying cows and passengers around 4:30 am when it fell off the bridge with passengers and some cows trapped under it. I can count 45 cows that are littered on the ground dead. Some passengers are trapped under the vehicle as well.”
Peter Langsan, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, confirmed the casualty figures and the evacuation of both deceased and injured victims to the hospital.
Langsan attributed the accident to speeding and cautioned against the practice of transporting humans in vehicles designated for cargo haulage, emphasizing the need for adherence to safety regulations on the roads.
