A Nigerian soldier, Adie Paul, has raised objections to the allocation of national honours, land, and flats to members of the Super Eagles team following the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Despite the team’s second-place finish in the tournament, Paul questioned the justification behind honouring the Super Eagles while soldiers battling insurgents receive no recognition from the federal government.
The Nations reported that while expressing his frustration on social media platform X, Paul, who claims to have sustained injuries while serving in the northeast, highlighted the lack of acknowledgment for soldiers risking their lives in conflict zones.
His remarks came in response to a tweet by X-user drpenking, who pointed out this: “Even Ahmed Musa wey no kick ball once for AFCON follow collect flat, land and OON. Wonderful times.”
In his reply, Paul, accompanied by a photo, stressed his years of service in the northeast and the injuries he endured without receiving any recognition or awards from the Army or the Nigerian government.
He wrote, “Yet, as a soldier, I stayed in the northeast fighting Boko Haram for four years plus, I was shot and I am still carrying the bullet in me till date, not even a medal from the Army/Nigeria government.”
