The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed dissatisfaction with Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa’s refusal to uphold the Court of Appeal’s ruling mandating the swearing-in of Labour Party (LP) lawmaker Destiny Nwagwu.
Following the Court of Appeal’s decision in Lagos to remove Nwagwu as Aba North State Constituency lawmaker and declare petitioner Aaron Uzodike as the rightful winner, Nwagwu threatened to resume his legislative duties, citing the Supreme Court’s validation of Governor Alex Otti’s election on similar grounds.
However, Uzodike’s absence from plenary sessions accentuated the speaker’s reluctance to acknowledge him as a member of the assembly, prompting outcry from constituents over the leadership vacuum.
Abraham Amah, Abia North Vice Chairman and acting Publicity Secretary of the party, condemned the speaker’s defiance, warning against contempt of court.
Amah asserted, “The speaker is, of course, committing contempt of court… We don’t know why the Speaker has refused to do what is right… The action of the speaker is outright contempt of court; it is condemnable and not befitting of somebody who holds such high public office as speaker of the assembly.”
As tensions escalate, the spotlight remains on Speaker Emeruwa’s adherence to legal mandates and the urgent need to uphold the rule of law in Abia State’s legislative affairs.
