The Federal Government has announced its intention to prosecute individuals found engaging apprentices under the age of 12, marking a decisive move in combatting child labor.
Speaking at a roadshow sensitization rally held at the Kugbo Furniture Market in Abuja, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing the minimum age requirement for apprenticeships across Nigeria.
Represented by Mohammed Tolani, Director of Skill Development and Certification, the minister emphasized that such practices contravene international conventions and standards established by the United Nations and the International Labour Organization (ILO), as outlined in the Labour Law, Cap. 198, Sections 49–53 LFN.
Enforcement efforts and awareness campaigns have already commenced nationwide, spanning all six geopolitical zones, to educate the public on the legal ramifications of engaging underage apprentices.
The Ministry further initiated the issuance of Trade Test Certificates of Competence to deserving individuals, aimed at bolstering employment opportunities and skills development.
To participate in the training scheme, apprentices must undergo accreditation by the Department of Skills Development and Certification within the Ministry, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and safeguarding against exploitative practices.
