In response to the country’s food security crisis and escalating costs of essential items, the Nigeria Customs Service has announced plans to directly distribute seized food items to Nigerians.

Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the service, disclosed that this initiative is to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens and improve access to essential food items.

To ensure safety, all items will undergo certification before distribution, addressing concerns about the quality of seized goods.

“To alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians and improve access to essential food items, the Nigeria Customs Service will facilitate the direct disposal of food items forfeited to the Federal Government

“These items would be certified fit for consumption by relevant agencies and made available to ordinary Nigerians nationwide through equitable distribution in our areas of operations.”

Amid recent protests against high living costs and economic challenges, the service emphasizes its commitment to transparency and fair distribution.

The disposal process will be communicated through NCS formations nationwide “with a firm commitment to transparency, fairness, and public safety.”

“We pledge that this exercise would be managed diligently to ensure that the benefits reach those most in need,” he declared.
