In response to mounting security challenges, the Zamfara State House of Assembly has ousted Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki, appointing Bashar Gummi as the interim leader.
During an emergency session, sparked by a motion from Maru Constituency’s Nasiru Abdullahi and backed by 18 out of 24 members, the decision to impeach Moriki was unanimous.
Citing the Speaker’s alleged inaction towards the state’s security woes, the assembly members called for urgent measures to combat rampant banditry, which has severely impacted socio-economic activities.
Shamsudeen Basko, representing Talata Mafara Constituency, emphasized the urgency of addressing insecurity, stating, “Our people are being killed and abducted on a daily basis… Let us call on the government to act now to protect our people.”
As the newly appointed pro-tempore Speaker, Bashar Gummi has been tasked with prioritizing efforts to quell the rising tide of insecurity plaguing the state.
