Cameroon’s football federation president, Samuel Eto’o, announced on Wednesday that Rigobert Song has resigned from his position as head coach of the national team.
The decision comes after Cameroon’s disappointing performance in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated in the last 16 by Nigeria.
“We have not achieved our objectives, and our executive committee and I do not see ourselves renewing the contract (with Song),” Eto’o explained to France 24.
Song, who took charge in February 2022, guided Cameroon to a dramatic World Cup qualification victory over Algeria.
However, their campaign in Qatar ended prematurely as they failed to progress beyond the group stage, despite a notable win against Brazil.
Acknowledging Song’s contributions, Eto’o remarked, “Song brought a lot to this team. Now we have to think about the future.”
During his tenure, the former Cameroon defender managed just six wins out of 23 matches in charge.
