Amidst protests from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Julius Abure, the incumbent national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), clinched a second term through unanimous affirmation by delegates at the party’s national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The victory was declared by the Chairman of the National Convention and Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, who also oversaw the return of other serving party officers.

Despite calls from the NLC for Abure’s resignation and the formation of a caretaker transition committee to organize a legitimate and inclusive national convention, the LP leadership stood firm in their decision.

Meanwhile, a factional chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Peter Okoye, dismissed the Nnewi convention, labeling it a sham and asserting that it lacks legitimacy.

Asserting the irregularities surrounding the convention, Okoye questioned the authenticity of the delegates involved in the election process, highlighting the absence of key stakeholders such as the NLC, TUC, NEC, and BOT members.
