The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Friday, sentenced Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, to six months in prison for abusing the Nigerian currency.
The sentence, which comes without the option of a fine, is meant to serve as a deterrent against the mutilation of the naira.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro issued the sentence and highlighted that the imprisonment, effective from March 24, 2024—the day of Bobrisky’s arrest, aims to caution others against similar misconduct.
The conviction follows Bobrisky’s guilty plea on April 5, after charges were brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
During sentencing, an incident occurred where the judge questioned Bobrisky’s gender, to which he confirmed, “I am a man.”
The sentencing, originally set for April 9, 2024, was postponed due to the declaration of a public holiday for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
In a plea for leniency, Bobrisky expressed regret over his actions, claiming ignorance of the law.
“I know my Lord. My lord, I wish that you could give me a second chance to use my platform to inform and educate my followers about spraying money. I would do a video on my page and I would educate people about spraying money. I will not repeat it, my lord, I regret my actions, my lord,” he pleades.
However, Justice Awogboro was unmoved, reminding Bobrisky that ignorance of the law excuses no one.
The case has drawn significant public attention, given Bobrisky’s status as a social media influencer with over five million followers.
