Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has stressed the insignificance of his party’s internal issues in comparison to the broader challenges facing Nigeria.

Mr. Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, made this remark during a recent interactive online session with Nigerians, hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo, saying that the party’s current crises are minor and would be resolved swiftly and harmoniously.

“Whatever is happening in the Labour Party is so minute compared to what is happening in the country. So, for me, it is something we will resolve amicably, and it is not anything to worry about. Let’s worry about the country and how the average Nigeria would be able to have a means of livelihood to feed themselves,” Mr. Obi stated.

He also addressed comments regarding his leadership role within the Labour Party, clarifying that his focus remains on ensuring proper function rather than leading.

“We have a more desperate situation to make the party function properly. Parties are just a means to be able to contest elections, and being the leader of a party does not reduce the price of food. What I want to see is that the average Nigerian lives in a society where they have access to education, access to healthcare and a means of livelihood,” he explained.

Despite not agreeing with the Supreme Court’s final decision on the presidential election, Mr. Obi reiterated his commitment to move forward, expressing gratitude towards his supporters and promising transparency concerning the party’s campaign finances.

He highlighted the accountability efforts, mentioning the external audit and the public disclosure of one campaign account managed by Aisha Yesufu.

Regarding personal transparency, Mr. Obi addressed a query about disclosing his assets, stating that revealing such information is unnecessary as he is not currently in power.

“It is not necessary for me to say my assets, but what I can tell Nigerians is that I am not a poor man, and nobody can accuse me of stealing government money,” he affirmed.
