Many were killed along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in a tragic road accident early Friday morning in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
A luxurious bus carrying members of the Lord’s Chosen Church collided with a Tipper vehicle, resulting in significant fatalities and injuries.
The church members were en route to Owerri for a scheduled weekend crusade when the tragic incident unfolded at the Orogwe end of the expressway.
According to an eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous, the collision was catastrophic.
“Yes. It (the accident) happened at the Orogwe end of the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway here in Owerri. From what I have seen, I think over 20 people died in this accident,” he reported.
In response to the emergency, local residents quickly acted, rushing some of the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Police spokesperson in Imo State, Assistant Police Officer Henry Okoye, confirmed the tragedy to PREMIUM TIMES.
“Over five (victims) have been confirmed dead. I don’t have the statistics for now. Those confirmed dead have also been deposited in the mortuary,” stated Mr. Okoye.
Following the accident, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Danjuma Aboki, took immediate action by deploying a police traffic team to the crash site to assist in the evacuation of victims.
