After a hiatus spanning more than five weeks, members of the Senate and House of Representatives are gearing up to reconvene in refurbished chambers.
The legislators are slated to resume plenary on Tuesday (today), marking the end of their extended break.
Following the commencement of Easter and Eid el-Fitr holidays on March 20, lawmakers were scheduled to reconvene on April 16.
However, the resumption was deferred, prolonging their absence.
In preparation for the resumption, the leadership of the House of Representatives, spearheaded by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and his predecessor Femi Gbajabiamila, inspected the green chamber on Monday, ensuring that all necessary arrangements were in place.
The renovation of the chamber, which commenced in April 2022, has been a long-awaited endeavor.
During this period, legislators have been utilizing a temporary chamber located in one of the committee rooms, awaiting the completion of the refurbishment.
Initially budgeted at over N30 billion in 2019, the renovation project faced scrutiny and criticism.
However, the amount was later revised down to N9 billion, addressing concerns and allowing the renovation work to progress steadily.
Now, as the chambers reopen, lawmakers are poised to resume their legislative duties in a refreshed and upgraded environment.
