Former Edo State deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, insists that only a candidate fluent in the Edo dialect can lead the state effectively.

As reported by The Punch, during a gathering of Edo Central PDP leaders in Irrua, Shaibu emphasized the importance of a “homeboy” as governor, saying, “Today, we have decided that a homeboy that we know will become the governor of Edo State.”

He raised concerns over candidates relying on interpreters, questioning how such a person would be qualified as a homeboy.

“Is somebody who comes here with an interpreter a homeboy? So, if that is a minus it means we will look for a homeboy.”

While Shaibu did not name any specific candidate, his remarks follow criticism aimed at PDP’s gubernatorial candidate, Asue Ighodalo, for using an interpreter during a campaign event.

Meanwhile, Dan Orbih, the party’s National Vice Chairman for the South-South Zone, expressed discontent over the handling of party affairs in the state, threatening to withhold support until issues are resolved.

The rift within the party, exacerbated by disagreements over candidacy, underscores the challenges facing PDP in Edo State.
