Lagos State’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stunned residents on Wednesday with the revelation of 86 partitioned rooms beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi, Lagos Island.
Each room, ranging in size from 10×10 to 12×10, was reportedly rented to tenants at a jaw-dropping annual rate of N250,000, according to Vanguard.
Wahab took to his social media handle to share the news, posting a video showcasing the shocking discovery.
In the footage, Wahab stated, “A total number of 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for different illegal activities were discovered under the Dolphin Estate Bridge.”
He further explained that the enforcement team from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources had swiftly dismantled all structures, including a container utilized for various illicit activities, from beneath the bridge.
Confirming the eviction of squatters, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, highlighted the environmental violations and illegal settlement beneath the bridge toward Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi.
Rotimi-Akodu revealed that 23 individuals were apprehended during the eviction, carried out by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure.
“Continuation of the removal of abode under Dolphin bridge. 11 more persons were arrested,” he added, warning against the hazardous materials and practices observed among the occupants.
