The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has brought out a startling statistics, revealing that Nigeria grappled with 105 instances of grid collapse from 2015 until now.

In a statement shared on the company’s official handle, TCN General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, shed light on the persistent challenges plaguing the nation’s electricity supply.

Recent reports of grid failures have led to widespread blackouts across several cities, with the most recent collapse occurring on April 15th, as generation plummeted to 64.70 megawatts.

Contrary to popular belief, TCN asserted that the frequency of grid disturbances has gradually declined in recent years, as Premium Times reported.

“In recent years, the number of grid disturbances/system collapses has gradually reduced, contrary to popular opinion,” Ms. Mbah stated.

Highlighting progress made, she revealed that from 2020 to date, there have been only twenty instances of total and partial grid disturbances combined—a significant 76.47% reduction compared to the previous five years.

Ms. Mbah attributed this improvement to strategic grid expansion efforts and in-house capacity building initiatives, albeit acknowledging the need for further enhancements.

“While there is room for improvement, TCN remains committed to minimizing grid disturbances to the lowest possible level,” she affirmed.
