Despite nationwide calls for a higher minimum wage, primary school teachers in Zamfara State’s 14 local government areas continue to endure a meager N8,000 salary.
Speaking at the J.B. Secretariat in Gusau during the Workers’ Day celebration, Nigeria Labour Congress Chairman in Zamfara State, Sani Halliru, expressed dismay over the stagnant wages of primary school educators, The Punch reported.
Halliru lamented, “Despite our appeals, primary school colleagues still receive N8,000 monthly.”
He urged Governor Dauda Lawal to implement the national minimum wage of N30,000 for Zamfara teachers, recognizing their unwavering dedication despite dismal compensation.
Halliru further underscored the anticipation among Zamfara workers for the NLC’s stance on the proposed N750,000 new minimum wage nationwide.
In response, Governor Lawal commended the state’s civil servants for their resilience amid challenges and pledged commitment to their welfare.
While refraining from overpromising, Lawal assured, “I will not promise you what I cannot sustain but I am assuring you that I will surprise you.”
