An investigation by Vanguard has revealed that the clash that erupted at Oke Odo Market in Lagos State was due to a betting agent’s alleged refusal to pay out a N60,000 win to a staker, as eyewitnesses narrate.
According to eyewitnesses, the conflict began when a Yoruba staker won N60,000 in the Baba Ijebu betting forum, only to be denied payment by the betting agent, who hailed from the North.
The agent reportedly demanded a cut of the winnings, sparking heated argument.
Eyewitnesses described how the situation escalated into physical altercation, with the betting agent seeking refuge among his peers in a nearby refuse dump.
The staker pursued him, resulting in a brawl involving supporters from both sides.
“This angered the winner who said he would only give him anything of his own volition. Noting that the agent should not force him to part with any amount from his money. The situation became a matter of hot argument and the betting agent ran to take refuge among his people in the nearby refuse dump.
“The winner also chased him there and they started fighting and in the commotion, some friends of the betting agent came in to assist their friend. The friends of the bet winner also joined the fray too,” a source said.
The clash led to the burning of some shops, injuries, and disruptions in the market, although police intervention helped restore calm.
Despite this, many stalls remain closed, reflecting the lingering tension.
