A yet-to-be-identified arsonist has set ablaze a mosque located in the Laraba Abasawa community of Gezawa local government area in Kano State during the early hours of Wednesday.
The attack occurred during the morning ‘Subh’ prayer, leading to several worshippers being injured.
Reports indicate that the assailant used petrol to set the mosque on fire while worshippers were engaged in their prayers.
Eyewitnesses described the disturbing incident where the arsonist locked the mosque doors after starting the blaze, trapping the worshippers inside.
One eyewitness recounted the chaotic event to Daily Trust, saying, “It took time for people outside to become aware of the incident and rescue the victims who were struggling to break out of the burning building.”
The attack resulted in at least 20 worshippers sustaining injuries, as reported.
Emergency services responded promptly, transporting the injured to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for medical treatment.
The Kano State Police Command, however, is yet to comment on the incident.
