Tragedy struck in Kubwa, Bwari Local Council of Abuja, as Mr. Onyebuchi Anene lost his life in a fatal shooting by a policeman during an altercation.
The unfortunate incident happened on Wednesday, igniting from a minor collision involving Anene and an okada rider, an eyewitness told Daily Trust.
Allegedly, Anene settled the matter with the okada rider and was on his way back home when police officers intervened at the scene.
Despite resolving the issue, the officers insisted on taking Anene to their station, a demand he rebuffed since the parties involved in the accident had already departed.
In the heat of the argument, a police officer fired a fatal shot at Anene, resulting in his immediate hospitalization at Kubwa General Hospital before being transferred to National Hospital, Abuja, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Confirming the tragic incident, SP Adeh Josephine, the command spokeswoman, revealed that CP Benneth Igweh, the FCT commissioner of police, has ordered an immediate investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The statement clarified that the fatal shooting occurred due to an accidental discharge by the police officer, emphasizing the condemnation of the officer’s unprofessional conduct by CP Igweh.
The officer involved is currently in custody, and the CP has extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the public, assuring swift justice in the matter.
