Umar Zulum Umara, son of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, has been arrested for killing a Chinese national during a fight over a woman at a nightclub in New Delhi, India.
Umara, a student at a university in New Delhi, allegedly smashed a bottle of alcoholic drink on the Chinese man who showed interest in the same woman as the governor’s son.
The incident happened two weeks ago while Governor Zulum, along with the governors of Adamawa and Yobe states, was in Pakistan attending a post-insurgency workshop, as reported by Sahara Reporters.
A source close to the family revealed, “Make no mistake, Governor Zulum’s son is the Nigerian governor’s son you heard about who killed someone in India. What happened was that the boy engaged a Chinese national in a fight over a lady at a nightclub in India, and Zulum’s son smashed a bottle on his head, which led to his death.”
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, further disclosed that the governor himself had a similar violent incident at the same age as his son.
“History has just repeated itself,” the source said.
Governor Zulum reportedly abandoned a planned trip to the United States and flew to India after receiving news of the incident. He made efforts to resolve the matter with the deceased’s Chinese parents, who were willing to oblige, but Indian authorities insisted the crime was against the Indian State and not the family.
“The governor returned home to Nigeria to garner support and enlisted the help of the current agriculture minister, Abubakar Kyari. Together, they tried to convince the Indian embassy to intervene but to no avail. His son is currently in detention and will be prosecuted in due course,” the source added.
