The Labour Party camp, led by its presidential flag bearer Peter Obi, has brushed off concerns about the recent call for former President Goodluck Jonathan to enter the 2027 presidential race.
This response follows the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) show of support for Jonathan’s potential return to the political arena.
Rumours have been circulating that Northern elites and politicians are increasingly dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s administration and are quietly seeking a change in leadership in the next election.
Adding to the speculation, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, recently expressed his willingness to abandon his own presidential ambitions if Jonathan decides to run.
During an event organized by the Non-Governmental Organisation Save Africa Initiative in Abuja, Mohammed endorsed Jonathan, citing his extensive experience and capability to revive the economy if given another chance to lead the country.
However, in an interview with journalists, Obi’s campaign spokesman, Yunusa Tanko, dismissed the idea of worrying about the 2027 presidential race at this stage.
“We are not perturbed with any situation. At the moment, we are only focusing on what concerns Nigerians in terms of their welfare, needs, and challenges,” Tanko stated.
He further declared that the Labour Party is currently focused on building its platform’s structure and will address the 2027 election when the time comes.
Tanko also hinted that the discussions around Jonathan might be an early test of the political waters but made it known that the Labour Party remains undeterred by the potential PDP candidacy of the former president.
“When we get to that particular bridge, we will cross it,” he added, making it clear that the Labour Party camp is not intimidated by the possibility of facing Jonathan in the next election.
