Samuel Lee Gravely Jr. broke barriers as the first African American officer to serve aboard a fighting ship, command a Navy vessel, and become a flag officer, retiring as a vice admiral.
His legacy of firsts in the U.S. Navy paved the way for future generations.
In a similar groundbreaking achievement, Kelechi Ndukwe, the first Nigerian and Igbo-American from Okoko-Item in Abia State, has reached the pinnacle of his 21-year career in the U.S. Navy.
On August 29, 2024, he was promoted to Navy Captain, marking a significant milestone in his service.
Captain Ndukwe, who assumed command of the USS Halsey (DDG-97), a U.S. Navy Guided Missile Destroyer, on April 2, 2021, will now command some of the Navy’s largest vessels, including aircraft carriers and submarines.
He will also oversee shore installations, lead critical missions, and represent the Navy in diplomatic roles when necessary.
