Dangote Refinery has refuted the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s (NNPCL) claim that it purchased Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at N898 per litre, clarifying that the transaction was done in dollars.

In a statement released on Sunday, Dangote’s Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, responded to NNPCL’s earlier claim.

He said, “Our attention has been drawn to a statement attributed to NNPCL spokesperson, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, that we sell our PMS at N898 per litre to the NNPCL. This statement is both misleading and mischievous, deliberately aimed at undermining the milestone achievement recorded today, September 15, 2024.”

The response came after NNPCL’s Chief Spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, told Daily Trust that they had purchased fuel from Dangote Refinery at N898 per litre, stating, “We successfully loaded PMS at the Dangote Refinery today. The claim that we purchased it at N760 per liter is incorrect. For this initial loading, the price from the refinery was N898 per liter.”

Dangote, however, clarified that the sale was made in dollars, as their current stock of crude was procured in foreign currency.

“We sold the products to NNPCL in dollars with a lot of savings against what they are currently importing,” the refinery explained.

The statement urged Nigerians to disregard the N898 per litre claim and await an official pricing announcement from the Technical Sub-Committee on Naira-based crude sales to local refineries, which is set to commence operations on October 1, 2024.

The refinery assured that with this effort, there would be petrol available across all local government areas, ensuring the end of fuel scarcity in the country.

“We assure Nigerians of availability of quality petroleum product and putting an end to the endemic fuel scarcity in the country,” Chiejina further noted.
