Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, revealed that he has made arrangements for his “transition” in a recent interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo. Soyinka, who turned 90 on July 13, 2024, made the statement during a candid discussion that aired on September 21, 2024, as part of CNN’s *African Voices Changemakers* series.
During the interview, Soyinka discussed various aspects of his life, including his journey as a writer, activist, and his time in prison. When asked by Madowo about his plans for the future, now that he has his own “legal piece of earth,” Soyinka responded with an unexpectedly somber tone, hinting at his eventual transition.
“I don’t want to be morbid,” Soyinka said, .”but that’s my future. I’ve made arrangements for that within the estate” His words left Madowo momentarily taken aback, prompting him to laugh and reply, “That is the most morbid answer anybody has ever given me.”
Soyinka continued, undeterred by the reaction, remarking, “”Many people don’t like to hear it. But it’s a future we all share.” However, he softened his response, clarifying that, before any final transition, he plans to focus on relaxation and taking a break from his creative endeavors.
In terms of productivity,” he added, “the immediate thing is to go on a vacation, to stop giving interviews, and to resume activities that bring me joy—things I had to set aside for my work. I’m also looking forward to just being a tourist for a while, sitting somewhere for a week or two and enjoying life.”
Soyinka’s reflections, both serious and light-hearted, offer a rare glimpse into the thoughts of a literary giant at the age of 90, as he balances contemplation of the inevitable with plans for leisure and travel.
