At least 17 militants from the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) drowned while attempting to escape across a river near the Nigeria-Niger Republic border, reports indicate. The insurgents were swept away by strong currents while fleeing from their bases between Kafetoa and Bulabulin Gaidam in Yobe State, close to the border.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, revealed the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the militants were trying to reach Tam village in Niger Republic when the river’s forceful current overwhelmed them.

The militants had been displaced from strongholds in Bulabulin Geidam, Chettimari, and Diffan, leading to the deadly crossing attempt.
