Social media activist Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan, along with his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, appeared at the National Assembly Complex for a joint committee investigation into corruption allegations involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS).

This inquiry follows accusations from controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, alias Bobrisky, who claimed that after his conviction and sentencing for naira abuse in April, the EFCC and NCS officials demanded bribes for him to serve his sentence in a VIP section of the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, Lagos.

The situation escalated after a voice note from VeryDarkMan surfaced, in which Bobrisky allegedly revealed that, following his conviction, his godfather and the Controller General of the NCS orchestrated his stay in a private apartment rather than in custody.

“In another related development, the board has equally suspended another senior officer of the Service, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections, In-Charge of Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja, for allegedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate,” a memo revealed.

NCS head Haliru Nababa assured that these suspensions were necessary to ensure a proper investigation.

“The outcome will be made public when concluded,” Nababa said.

On September 26, the House of Representatives launched an official investigation into these bribery allegations.

The motion, sponsored by Patrick Umoh of Akwa Ibom State, urged immediate action on the accusations against the EFCC and NCS.

Umoh expressed alarm over the allegations, stating, “The publication alleges that the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, upon collection of the sum of N15,000,000. The allegations also claim that Bobrisky, after being convicted for defacing the naira, did not serve his sentence in custody but was housed outside the prison.”

He stressed that such allegations damage Nigeria’s image and cannot be ignored. Following the motion’s adoption, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas referred the matter to the Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions for further investigation.
