Internal strife has deepened within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State as prominent party leaders and key stakeholders from the Ukwa-East/Ukwa-West Federal Constituency have called on their House of Representatives member, Chris Nkwonta, to immediately defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nkwonta, who was the only PDP candidate elected to the House from Abia in the 2023 general elections, is now under pressure to leave the party following frustrations among PDP leaders over ongoing national issues.
The Whistler reports that during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Obehie, Ukwa West LGA, top PDP figures vocied their discontent with the party’s internal strife, particularly the power struggle among PDP governors at the national level.
In a statement signed by notable PDP members including John Ajuzieogu, Goodhope Nwagbara, and 37 others, former Chief of Staff to the Governor, Don Ubani, expressed disappointment over the delay in conducting the Abia State PDP Congress.
They urged Nkwonta to leave the party, warning that his continued membership would harm the interests of his constituency.
The Ukwa-East and Ukwa-West PDP stakeholders also lamented the poor state of infrastructure in their region but expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the ongoing NDDC projects.
“We will align and holistically support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
