Just hours after the Inspector General of Police (IGP) ordered his officers to vacate the 23 local government area secretariats in Rivers State, suspected arsonists have set fire to the Eleme Local Government Secretariat.

According to a local resident who spoke anonymously to Daily Trust, heavily armed thugs stormed the secretariat on Monday morning, wielding dangerous weapons.

“Few hours after IGP ordered his men out of Council Secretariat, heavily armed men invaded the council and ignited a substance suspected to be dynamite, which set the entire old Secretariat building ablaze. The thugs smashed windows of buildings not affected by fire,” the source revealed.

At the time of reporting, Rivers State Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, had not confirmed the incident.
