The Labour Party (LP) has expressed openness to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s proposal to serve as running mate to Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
The former New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate made this offer in a viral post, stating his willingness to join forces with Obi after their previous talks for the 2023 elections fell through.
Speaking in Hausa, Kwankwaso, who holds a PhD and is a former Kano State governor, said, “I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically; I’m his elder brother. I’ve no problem with deputizing for Peter Obi, but only if certain conditions are met.”
He, therefore, indicated his readiness to reengage in discussions with Obi, provided that trust is established.
In the 2023 elections, Peter Obi finished third with over six million votes, while Kwankwaso garnered 1.4 million, coming in fourth.
Kwankwaso has been vocal in criticizing the Bola Tinubu administration, particularly its economic policies, which he claims have worsened the country’s economic situation.
LP National Secretary Umar Farouk, in an exclusive interview with The Punch, welcomed Kwankwaso’s renewed interest but cautioned against divisive remarks.
“We are happy Kwankwaso has alighted from the high horse he was riding and is now willing to offer himself to Obi as deputy. But again, he should stop this talk of being a bigger politician and PhD holder,” Farouk said.
He added that a merger would benefit Nigerians, but acknowledged that obstacles from the current government might arise.
With hopes of a future collaboration, the LP remains focused on good governance and aligning with individuals who share their vision.
