The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Yushau Ahmed yesterday gave reasons why the newly approved increase in corps members’ allowances has not yet been paid. He said the delay was due to non-release of funds.

Earlier reports revealed that the Federal Government had approved an increment in the monthly allowance for corps members, raising it from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024.

According to a statement by the NYSC via its official Facebook page, this decision was communicated through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) dated September 25, and signed by the commission’s Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.

Despite this official announcement, the increase was not reflected in the September payment to corps members, who continued to receive the previous allowance of N33,000 instead of the updated N77,000.

During an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Brigadier-General Ahmed explained that although the approval has been granted, the government is yet to disburse the necessary funds for its implementation.
