Pastor William Kumuyi, General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Christian Life Ministry, has called on fellow clergymen to stop financially exploiting their congregants under the guise of “seed sowing” for prosperity.
He made this appeal during a sermon delivered at a Christian gathering on Friday, October 18, stressing that the true role of preachers is to help their members, especially the poor and vulnerable, rather than take from them.
In his sermon, Pastor Kumuyi emphasized that ministers of the gospel should be providing practical solutions to the needs of their congregation, particularly widows and those struggling financially, instead of pressuring them to give what little they have.
Elijah added value to the lives of the poor and widows who could not repay him,” Kumuyi said. “Preachers should raise up those who are down and poor, not take from them under the pretense of sowing seeds for financial multiplication.
He further condemned the practice of some preachers who, he said, “brainwash” vulnerable members, particularly widows, into giving everything they have, often leaving them worse off. “We tell these widows to sow everything they have as though it will be multiplied, but when they return home, how are they and their children faring? How are they able to provide for their families?” he asked.
Kumuyi expressed deep concern about the growing trend of church founders amassing wealth at the expense of their followers. “The preachers of today are getting richer while their members are becoming poorer. This is not how it should be,” he stated.
He called on religious leaders to re-evaluate their practices and to follow the example of biblical figures like Elisha, who provided for widows in need through supernatural means, rather than taking from them.
Let someone speak out and tell our prophets, preachers, and bishops that this exploitation must end,” Kumuyi concluded.
