The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) will embark on an indefinite strike from midnight on Sunday, October 27, in protest over the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU, which coordinated the action, issued a directive for all non-teaching university staff nationwide to join the strike, citing grievances that date back to when they joined an industrial action led by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
In a recent circular titled “Latest development in respect of the withheld four (4) months salaries,” JAC informed branch chairmen that the strike, initially scheduled for October 23, was moved to ensure the coordination of efforts across NASU branches. The shift allowed time for a crucial Trade Group Council meeting held October 23-24 at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The circular, signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, expressed frustration over delayed action from the Ministry of Finance, despite President Bola Tinubu’s partial approval for 50% of the withheld salaries to be paid.
We have repeatedly alerted the government to address this situation,” the statement read. “But the sincerity of the government’s commitment remains questionable.
NASU and SSANU affirmed that they would not back down until their members receive the full payment of withheld salaries. JAC praised the dedication of their union members and underscored their resolve to continue the struggle until a satisfactory resolution is reached.
