For the second time in just three days, Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed, causing widespread blackouts across several regions.
At 11:30 a.m. on November 7, power generation nationwide dropped to zero, according to the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org).
This latest collapse disrupted operations for generation companies across the country.
Electricity distribution companies quickly confirmed the outage on social media. Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), which serves parts of Lagos, notified its customers on X, saying, “Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 07 November 2024 at 11:29Hrs affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
Similarly, Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) alerted customers about a “potential system failure,” stating, “Kindly be informed that at precisely 11.29 hours today, 7th November 2024, we experienced a simultaneous loss of supply across our network. A potential system failure or collapse is suspected. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid.”
The cause of the repeated grid collapse remains unclear, as officials work to restore power.
