Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has admitted he will be surprised were his team Benin to again upset Nigeria in Abidjan.

In June, Benin achieved a record 2-1 win over the star-studded Super Eagles in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Both teams clash again in Abidjan Thursday with qualification to the 2025 AFCON at stake.

Two difficult matches, qualification will be decided over the two matches, I would be surprised if in the event of a victory against Nigeria that Rwanda loses,” Rohr said.

At that point, it would already be decided. But I don’t believe it, I think Rwanda will be difficult to beat at home for Libya, and we have seen it. They often also have the support of their fans.

He spoke on the thinking behind inviting Nigeria-based goalkeeper Serge Obassa (Remo Stars), stating his familiarity with Nigerian football as a major factor.

Obviously, Sergio Obassa knows Nigerian football very well since he plays for Remo Stars, who are one of the best clubs in Nigeria at the moment. So his experience and know-how can also be useful to us, whether in training or possibly in matches,” he explained.

The biggest absentee for Benin is Burnley defender Cedric Houtondji, who is injured.

“Unfortunately, we have Cédric Hountondji injured, who we will miss, that’s for sure,” Rohr lamented.

But we have Olivier Verdon and Mohamed Tijani, two players in the centre who are also up to the task. We won’t be able to play with three in the centre, unfortunately, in the absence of Cédric.
