The principal of Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, has been suspended following allegations of substandard feeding for students, as revealed in a viral video. The video, which showed students consuming what appeared to be poorly prepared and non-nutritious meals, sparked widespread concern.

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, announced the suspension in a statement released on Saturday, condemning the incident. She revealed that an investigation would be conducted into the school’s boarding conditions, as well as the facilities at all 26 state-owned boarding schools.

Following the disturbing video of students being served unpalatable meals, I visited the school unannounced and ordered a comprehensive review of all boarding facilities, including hostels, dining halls, kitchens, and sanitation across the state,” said Etiebet. The review will be managed jointly by the permanent secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board.

The investigation will assess the standards of boarding services and ensure that all facilities adhere to minimum requirements to protect students’ welfare. Dr. Umoh’s suspension, according to Etiebet, will remain in effect pending the outcome of the review.

Etiebet noted that while the state’s free education policy covers tuition but not boarding fees, the government remains committed to ensuring the welfare of students, particularly in public schools. She urged parents to support their children’s educational needs and assured that the ministry is focused on upholding student dignity and well-being in all public institutions.
