John Tinniswood, the world’s oldest man, passed away at 112 years old at his care home in Southport, northwest England, Guinness World Records confirmed on Tuesday.

Tinniswood, who was born in Liverpool on August 26, 1912, lived through historic moments such as the sinking of the Titanic and both World Wars.

Tinniswood was recognized as the world’s oldest living man in April, following the death of 114-year-old Venezuelan Juan Vicente Perez.

“His last day was surrounded by music and love,” his family said in a statement, also expressing gratitude to “all those who cared for him over the years.”

Tinniswood himself attributed his remarkable longevity to “pure luck.” When asked about the secret to his long life, he remarked, “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.” Yet, he emphasized the importance of moderation: “If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much, if you do too much of anything, you’re going to suffer eventually.”

During World War II, Tinniswood served in an administrative role in the Royal Army Pay Corps, later working in accounts for major oil companies Shell and BP.

A devoted supporter of Liverpool Football Club, he also had a tradition of eating fish and chips every Friday.

Currently, the world’s oldest living woman is Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who is 116 years old.
