The Federal Government has issued a strong warning to health authorities nationwide, urging them to activate heightened alert systems following the detection of the XEC COVID-19 variant, which is spreading quickly across the globe.

The variant, first identified in Australia, has already been reported in 29 countries and is raising concerns due to its rapid transmission and potential impact on public health. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare directed health authorities to remain vigilant and increase monitoring efforts to safeguard public health.

In a letter dated December 5, Dr. O.N. Anuma, Permanent Secretary and Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, notified the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of the alarming development. The letter, shared with *PUNCH Online* on Saturday, stated:

I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally. This variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”

Dr. Anuma emphasized the urgency of activating alert systems in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, particularly for those exhibiting COVID-like symptoms. He urged medical professionals to maintain a high index of suspicion for possible cases of the XEC variant.

The ministry also highlighted the need for swift and collaborative efforts among health institutions and other relevant stakeholders to exchange vital data regarding the new strain. The letter called for enhanced monitoring protocols to mitigate the risks associated with the variant.

We request your committee to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to share critical data regarding this strain and implement enhanced monitoring protocols,” the letter read.

Anuma further stressed that timely information-sharing would be crucial in enabling an effective response to the emerging threat.

Health professionals across the country are being urged to remain alert and take immediate action to strengthen surveillance and response measures to curb the spread of the XEC variant. The Federal Government has called for a coordinated approach to tackle this new health challenge, prioritizing public safety and timely intervention.
