Hospitals across China are grappling with overwhelming numbers of patients as a rapid spread of illness strains the healthcare system, prompting authorities to encourage the widespread use of face masks once again.

Social media has been inundated with distressing images showing overcrowded emergency rooms, long queues of parents with sick children, and hospital wards filled with masked individuals. These visuals have fueled concerns and prompted comparisons to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unconfirmed reports are also circulating, suggesting that crematoriums and funeral homes are nearing full capacity, intensifying public anxiety. These developments have left many drawing parallels to the initial COVID-19 outbreak, reigniting fears across the country.

While health experts speculate that the surge could be linked to human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus that typically causes mild respiratory symptoms, Chinese health authorities have not yet provided official confirmation of this theory.

The current wave echoes the one seen in the winter of 2022-2023, when a rise in mycoplasma pneumonia cases, also known as “white lung,” predominantly affected children. Experts had attributed this spike in infections to weakened immune systems, a result of prolonged lockdowns and school closures that limited exposure to everyday germs.

As the situation develops, health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
