The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has suffered another setback as its former chairman, Senator Emma Nwaka, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nwaka’s political switch comes six months after he quietly resigned from the PDP on June 12, 2024, a move he publicly confirmed on August 30, citing “personal reasons.”

A photo recently surfaced showing Nwaka receiving an APC membership card at Oguduasa Ward 5, giving credence to the speculation about his allegiance.

The card was officially presented by the ward’s APC chairman, Sampson Achi Ndukwe, during a ceremony attended by Isuikwuato Local Government APC Chairman, Chief Udochi Okorie, and other party officials.

Confirming the defection, a political aide to Nwaka stated that the former PDP chairman would soon address the public regarding his decision.

Nwaka, a governorship aspirant under the PDP in the 2023 elections, led Abia PDP between 2010 and 2015, a period when the party dominated the state’s political landscape.

The PDP’s fortunes in Abia began to dwindle after its two-decade dominance ended with the Labour Party’s victory in the 2023 governorship election.

Since then, several party stalwarts, including former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, have defected to the APC, further weakening the PDP’s foothold in the state.
