In 2024, the World Bank disbursed $117.5 billion in loans, grants, equity investments, and guarantees to partner countries and private businesses.
According to the World Bank’s 2024 annual report, African countries accounted for the largest share of loans borrowed from the Bretton Woods institution, with loans amounting to $38 billion
Africa was followed by Europe and Central Asia ($24.7 billion), Latin America and the Caribbean ($19.4 billion), South Asia ($15.9 billion), East Asia and Pacific ($12.5 billion), Middle East and North Africa ($6.5 billion) and global ($0.4 billion).
The bank provides concessional grants and loans to the governments of the world’s 75 poorest countries through the International Development Association (IDA).
“In 2024, the World Bank Group provided much-needed financing, conducted research and analysis, and partnered with governments, the private sector, and other institutions to address global development challenges. Its five institutions share a commitment to reducing poverty, increasing shared prosperity and promoting sustainable development,” it explained.
Ethiopia topped the list of African countries with the largest share of loans in Africa. Addis Ababa borrowed a whopping $3,395 million (KSh 439.7 billion) during the period under review.
Nigeria was second on the list, with $2,200 million , while Tanzania was third with $1,815 million
Kenya borrowed $ 1,654 million (KSh 214.2 billion) to emerge fourth, while Mozambique closed the list of the top five, having secured $1,130 million (KSh 146.3 billion).
